A dental implant is a tiny metallic
cylinder which is implanted within or attached to the bone of the jaw.
Because it is compatible with living tissue, it can fuse to the bone
and serve as the foundation or root for a replacement tooth. The specific
needs of the patient dictate the type and design of implant which must
be used. One implant allows for replacement of one or more teeth. Two
implants can stabilize a complete denture, and several implants can
provide support for a fixed bridge where some or all natural teeth
are missing. Once the implant fuses to the bone (3-6 months) it is
equivalent to a healthy natural tooth in its ability to withstand biting
forces.
The stability provided by an implant
provides a patient with a powerful new chewing strength which also
allows for much more comfort and ease in swallowing and speaking. The
insecurity of a loose denture, which often inhibits speech and smile,
can be reduced. Dental implants can also eliminate the need for unsightly
hooks and clasps of removable partial dentures; can help to stabilize
loose teeth; and can relieve the stress on remaining natural teeth,
thus preventing premature loss. The enhancement of general dental function
improves appearance and renews self-esteem. Because they are currently
the closest approximation to nature's own teeth, dental implants are
an excellent investment in oral health.
Dental implants can usually be done
in one or two office visits with local or intravenous anesthesia. Patients
are often surprised at how little discomfort is involved. As a matter
of fact, most patients describe the procedure as "remarkably comfortable."
First, the implant is submerged under
the gum tissue and implanted in the jaw. It is left alone to heal for
three to six months while the implant fuses directly with the bone or
surrounding tissue. (During that time, most people are able to wear
their own dentures or a temporary bridge.)
Once the fusion is complete, a brief
second procedure is required to uncover the top of the implant so that
the preparations for the final crown, denture or bridge can begin.
